Look inside

Take a closer look inside

Open a habitat scene, then study one of its animals. Each view pairs the book’s pages with something to notice together.

Pages 6–7 · Both Atlas editions

Start at the beaver pond

A short story opens the habitat. Labels and a look-and-find list give your child somewhere to start looking.

A fact to follow

Water is a habitat

Fresh surface waters, such as streams, rivers, ponds and lakes, provide habitat, a natural home, for many kinds of plants and animals.

Try it together

Find the American beaver in the painting. Then look for the wood duck, river otter and green darner listed in the field notes.

Where would you begin looking?Reveal the answer

Start at the pond. Follow a label to an animal, then use the list to choose what to find next.

Seven chapters

Seven habitats, one field skill in each

Each chapter opens on a painted spread of a real American habitat with your child in the scene. They learn the skill there, then use it to find that habitat's animals.

Explore all seven habitats and field skills
  1. Fresh water opener spread with Hazel pointing out a beaver lodge
    Habitat 1 of 7

    Fresh water

    Field skill: spot it first

The creek slows into a wide pond, and Hazel spots the beaver lodge before Dad does.

  2. Wetland opener spread with Hazel and Dad sitting in the reeds
    Habitat 2 of 7

    Wetland

    Field skill: sit and wait

Hazel wants to run straight to the reeds. They sit for a long time, and a crane walks out of the mist.

  3. Forest opener spread with Hazel holding binoculars
    Habitat 3 of 7

    Forest

    Field skill: be quiet

Something is drumming on a dead tree. Hazel holds very still and doesn't say a word.

  4. Grassland opener spread with Hazel crouched in the grass
    Habitat 4 of 7

    Grassland

    Field skill: get down low

Nose to the stems, Hazel finds a snake sliding by, then a butterfly.

  5. Desert opener spread with Hazel and Dad at sunrise
    Habitat 5 of 7

    Desert

Field skill: come back at sunrise

At noon nothing moved, so the next day Hazel wakes Dad before the sun.

  6. Mountain and tundra opener spread with Hazel using binoculars
    Habitat 6 of 7

    Mountain and tundra

    Field skill: look far

Up high everything is far away. Hazel finds a white speck on the cliff and lifts the binoculars.

  7. Coast opener spread with Hazel and Dad on the rocks
    Habitat 7 of 7

    Coast

    Field skill: time the tide

The tide is going out. Rocks that were underwater this morning are dry, so they climb down to look.

Leaves in opposite pairs
